Fred Hersch’s short notes on the composition:

West Virginia Rose (2013) – Written for my mother Florette and my grandmother Roslyn – they are both from West Virginia and have floral names. The vocal version, “A West Virginia Rose”, has lyrics by Norma Winstone and was recorded by Kurt Elling on his “Upward Spiral” album featuring Branford Marsalis. I play this straight through as written, no solos. Makes a nice intro to another tune.
